As the temperatures dropped across the UK and the recent arctic blast did its worst, freezing temperatures were felt across the country. Some areas were worse than others, but that extremely cold weather triggered a series of cold weather payments, which means thousands of households are eligible to receive a £25 boost to their finances.
Cold weather payments are made to vulnerable people, including pensioners, and those on certain benefits in England and Wales. The extra cash is designed to help them pay for heating when the temperature dips below freezing. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) confirmed that certain areas across the UK would be receiving the payment and that included parts of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
The extremely cold snap should be on its way out soon. Although Notts is still experiencing temperature lows of between -1 and -3 for the next couple of days. But by Sunday, the thermometer should be rising. The Met Office is currently forecasting highs of 6 degrees on Sunday, December 18, and 13 degrees on Monday, December 19.

So, just how are cold weather payments triggered? According to the government website, you’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. This rule is in place between 1 November and 31 March and, if triggered, will mean those eligible will get £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather.
To qualify for the payment you will need to be eligible for at least one of certain benefits. According to the DWP you may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- Support for Mortgage Interest
Those eligible do not need to apply, it will be paid automatically. The bank top-up will be in eligible people’s bank account within 14 days of the trigger and cold weather payments do not affect other benefits.
Lancs Live reported a DWP spokesman as saying: “These additional payments provide support every year to help people experiencing the coldest weather. Cold weather payments can be triggered right through to the end of March, giving people facing disproportionately cold weather that extra reassurance over the chillier months.”
For Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, the postcode areas that qualify as a result of the recent cold weather, include NG1-22, as well as NG25. Also on the list are postcode areas NG31-34.
