DWP Cold Weather Payments due for Newcastle and post codes around the North East

Cold Weather payments are due for people on low incomes in Newcastle and around the North East, but not for every area.

Recorded temperatures and forecasts for the period between December 6 and December 12 are low enough to trigger the £25 payments for eligible households on low-income benefits.

They include homes in Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and County Durham.

The temperatures used to deploy Cold Weather Payments are recorded at different weather stations across the region and nearby. Each postcode is tied to a weather station, which can actually be a fair distance away.

As not every weather station used has met the threshold for Cold Weather Payments - which require an average temperature of 0c or below for seven days - not every post code in the North East is due the £25 benefit, yet.

Some parts of Northumberland are due one, like Hexham (NE43), as its Cold Weather Payment temperature is recorded at Albemarle near Stamfordham. But in Morpeth (NE61), a payment is not due, as the temperatures recorded and forecast at Cockle Park Weather Station are not low enough.

Post codes whose Cold Weather Payment temperatures are recorded at Albemarle and Redesdale Weather Stations in Northumberland, and Bainbridge and Leeming Weather Stations in North Yorkshire, are due Cold Weather Payments. They include areas in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.

You can use the DWP's post code checker to see if your area is due payments.

Why isn't my postcode due a Cold Weather Payment but the ones nearby are?

Each post code in England is tied to a weather station for recording Cold Weather Payment temperatures.

Some of these weather stations can be quite far away from the post code itself. For example, Sunderland City Centre's (SR1) Cold Weather Payment temperatures are recorded at Albemere, which is around 25 miles away in Northumberland. Whereas Peterlee (SR8) uses Loftus Weather Station near Redcar.

The temperature threshold is low enough at Albemere to trigger the payments, but hasn't been in Redcar, which is why Sunderland residents are due payments but Peterlee's are not, despite both being in SR post code areas.

Similarly, parts of Northumberland with NE post codes are due Cold Weather Payments if they use Albemere. But other NE areas, like Morpeth, use different weather stations, where recorded and forecast temperatures have not been as low.
