DWP: Benefits and pensions due on Tuesday and Wednesday may be paid later in the day

The DWP says people expecting benefit and state pension payments today and tomorrow might not get their money until later in the day.

Last week, the DWP issued an update that payments due on Tuesday September 20 and Wednesday September 21 will be paid "throughout the day".

People who rely on benefit, state pensions and tax credits woke up in panic today as they found they had not received their payment. Many took to social media to vent their frustration.

"Woke up 5 times during the night to check my bank account and nothing, so stressed and angry this is really bad," tweeted one.

"DWP hasn't processed the payments for thousands of sick and disabled people due to the funeral bank holiday yesterday," said another.

Banks and building societies have told customers the lack of payment is not due to a banking error.

"I can assure you there are no issues with payments our end," replied Nationwide to one customer.

"Payment runs take place between midnight and 6am. If your payment does not credit your account on these runs you would need to contact the DWP to confirm the payment was sent.

The delay causes disruption for anybody with bills to pay today. But the DWP says not to contact them.

DWP on Friday: “People due payments and credits on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 September will also be paid as normal, but throughout the day of their expected payment date. There is no need to call us to check, as payments will be made. We advise people to check their accounts later in the day. No one needs to call us to check. We advise people check their accounts later in the day."

Payment for the following benefits will be paid "throughout the day" if they are due on Tuesday September 20 or Wednesday September 21:

  • £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance
