Over 8 million households will be automatically paid £324 by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) this month. People on benefits who qualify for the cost of living payments will be paid the money from today.
As part of the government's cost of living support for people struggling the most with rising bills, payments of £650, paid in two lump sums of £326 and £324, are being handed out to people on Universal Credit, income-based Jobseekers Allowance and Employment Support Allowance, Income Support, Pension Credit and Tax Credits.
The first payments were made back in July, and from today people will start to receive their second payment. However, not everyone is due to get theirs at the same time, so some people will have to wait until later this month before it will land in their account.

People who get DWP benefits will get their payments between now and November 23, but around one million claimants, who get tax credits and no other means-tested benefits, will get their second payments after that date. The payments are made directly into eligible recipients’ bank accounts, with no need for people to apply or do anything to receive it.
The payment reference on DWP recipients’ bank accounts will be their national insurance number, followed by “DWP COL”. People on tax credits will get their payments from HMRC, and the payment reference will be “HMRC COLS”.
When will you get your payment?
Those eligible to receive the second cost of living payment from today include people on:
- Universal Credit
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Pension Credit
To be eligible, claimants must have been claiming and entitled to a payment between 26 August and 25 September 2022, with the exception of pensioner households, who may be able to have a new Pension Credit claim backdated.
You may be eligible to receive a payment from HMRC between November 23 and 30 if you are not on any of the benefits above, but you are on:
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
HMRC is making payments shortly after the DWP in order to avoid duplicate payments, the government said.
Who is not eligible for a payment?
You will not get a payment if you get New Style Employment and Support Allowance, contributory Employment and Support Allowance, or New Style Jobseeker’s Allowance, unless you get Universal Credit.
If you have a joint claim with a partner, you will get one payment of £326 and one payment of £324 for your joint claim, if you’re entitled.
