DWP £150 cost of living payment update for people who recently made a new disability benefit claim

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently announced that millions of people claiming disability benefits in Scotland, England and Wales will receive a one-off cost of living payment of £150 between June 20 and July 4. To be eligible for the lump sum, claimants must have received a payment, or later found to be eligible, on April 1, 2023.

Minister for Disabled People Tom Pursglove MP has shared an estimated 6.7million people are due to receive the payment, including 639,000 living in Scotland. However, in a written response to shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Ashworth MP, he also offered a bit of hope to people who have recently made a new claim for any of the qualifying disability benefits.

Mr Pursglove said: “Successful claimants who registered their claim to a qualifying disability benefit before the qualifying date and were paid for 1 April 2023, will receive the Disability Cost of Living Payment even if the claim was awarded after the qualifying date.”

Recent guidance from DWP also said those waiting on confirmation of their entitlement to disability benefits on April 1, or who are waiting to be assessed for eligibility to receive disability benefits, the payment process may take longer and arrive after the scheduled window closes on July 4, but the money will still arrive automatically.
