Dwight Yorke slams 'waffler' Jamie Carragher over 'ludicrous' Erling Haaland comments

Dwight Yorke has hit out at Jamie Carragher after the pundit's comments about Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

Norway striker Haaland is the top scorer in the Premier League this season, hitting four hat-tricks and netting at a rate of better than a goal a game. However, former Liverpool defender Carragher suggested the former Borussia Dortmund man might have chosen the wrong club.

Carragher's comments came amid City's 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday, in which Haaland was starved of service. Former Man Utd striker Yorke disagrees, though, taking aim at his former rival.

"What a ludicrous statement from Jamie Carragher to say that Erling Haaland has not picked the right club in Manchester City, it's a ridiculous statement," Yorke told OLBG. "Everyone has their opinion I suppose and we've both played the game at a certain level, but I'd take whatever Carragher says with a pinch of salt."

Haaland has still scored four goals in seven games in all competitions since the turn of the year, though hie rate has slowed after scoring in 10 straight matches between August and October. "When Haaland was scoring all his goals before, everyone was talking about how good he is at Manchester City, now he has not scored in one game, Haaland has signed for the wrong team," Yorke continued.

"What a load of waffle from Carragher, you also have one of the best passers in the world in Kevin De Bruyne in the team too, they just have to see Haaland's runs more. There is a simple solution, just play the ball in the space."

Haaland has often been used as City's sole striker, but was part of a front two with Julian Alvarez on Sunday as City looked to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time. They drew yet another blank, though, with Harry Kane's first half goal sending the points the way of Spurs.

"He may've actually picked the wrong club to actually get the best out of him," Carragher said on Sky Sports' coverage. "He's scored 25 Premier League goals, but Man City as a team have scored the same amount of goals, and they're conceding more, and it's far easier to counter attack them as well, so they're a different team, and a lesser team with Erling Haaland in the team."

City's defeat on Sunday left them five points adrift of league leaders Arsenal, though they still have two games to come against Mikel Arteta's team. The first of the two is on February 15, in a match postponed from its original October date.

Pep Guardiola's team also took on Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup, with Haaland drawing a blank as Nathan Ake's goal sent the 2018 winners through to the last 16. They will travel to Bristol City on February 28, with the club's top scorer aiming to score in the FA Cup for the very first time.
