Dwayne Johnson in Fast & Furious U-turn as he returns six years after Vin Diesel feud

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson had seemingly drawn a line under his Fast & Furious life, but fans were stunned when he appeared in what is part of the franchise's final countdown.

The Hollywood star, 50, had been a big part of the long-running movie series, but previously claimed he would "never return" and hit out at fellow star Vin Diesel.

However, he appears to have had a change of heart and surprised fans with a cameo appearance in part one of the final edition.

The latest part, titled Fast X as out next Friday, May 19, and fans are expected to see the former wrestler reprise his popular role.

However, his Luke Hobbs character isn't going to be a mainstay in the frantic flick, according to TheWrap. Instead, it's expected to be a brief appearance after an apparent backtrack after labelling Vin "manipulative" in 2021.

And while fans will be shocked by Dwayne's role, Vin also threw another bombshell into the equation when promoting the movie in Venice on Friday.

On the red carpet, the star announced he had been asked to change the two-part finale into a trilogy.

Talking to Fandango reporters, he said: "As filmmakers you want to allow people to enjoy the film without tipping the hat too much.

"I can say this. Going into making this movie, the studio asked if this could be a two-parter. After the studio saw this part one the said can we make this Fast X the Finale a trilogy."

After dropping the huge news, Vin quickly exited the chat saying he might get in trouble.

And fans on Twitter had mixed reviews at the mic drop. One user joked: "The final trilogy until the next trilogy before the reboot trilogies. No way this franchise ever ends."

Another had a similar reaction and sarcastically wrote: "Vin will probably reveal that they're doing a 3-part epilogue at the Fast 12 premiere."

However, a third was ecstatic with the announcement, penning: "A 3 part trilogy finale I’m 100% here for it."

At the time of the first reveal for Fast X, Vin confessed it was set to be an "emotional" movie. It has been confirmed that Paul Walker's daughter will also appear in the production in honour of her dad.

Meadow Rain Walker said this week: "I am so blessed to be able to honour my father's legacy and share this with him forever."

Paul died in 2013 at the age of 30 following a car accident.
