The DVLA is warning potentially millions of drivers they could be owed money.
It comes as millions of people sold their cars in 2022. On Tuesday, the DVLA told people who have sold their cars they need to inform the government department or risk missing out on cash.
When a car is sold any money already paid on road tax can be refunded.

For example, if you've paid your car tax for a full year, but sell it after three months, you'll be owed seven months' worth as refund. People should inform the DVLA as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
In a tweet, the DVLA said: "When you sell a car, tell DVLA online to make sure you get your tax refund quickly. It's really easy to do". People are then advised to click this link.
DVLA guidance says before you sell the vehicle you should apply to update your log book (V5C) if you’ve changed your name or address, or made changes to your vehicle.
It adds: "You may not get a refund for any full months left on your vehicle tax if your details are incorrect."
You must tell DVLA you’ve sold the vehicle and give them the full name and address of the buyer. If you do not do this, any vehicle tax refund you’re owed might be affected.
