As the darker nights roll in, many drivers will be preparing their cars for the wintery days ahead.
Motorists are now being urged by the DVLA to make sure they are following all the Highway Code rules, which are created by the DVSA, to keep themselves safe while driving during winter, reports the Daily Record.
Drivers have to clear all snow and ice from their windows, and ensure their lights are clean - as well as scrubbing number plates to be visible to other road users.

With temperatures dropping, Scotland may see snow in the coming months with people hoping for a white Christmas. However, this comes with its own safety issues, with drivers being told to remove all snow from their car which could fall off into the path of other road users.

Highway Code Rule 113 - Lighting
The Highway Code states that drivers must ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise. This is so other road users that are behind them can see how far ahead they are, and when overtaking, they can ensure they have enough space when doing so.
The DVSA adds: "Use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified."
Drivers must also use their headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, for example when it is foggy or snowing. Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise.
Highway Code Rule 94 - Glasses
The Highway Code states: "At night or in poor visibility, do not use tinted glasses, lenses or visors if they restrict your vision." While people would assume this is a simple rule, ensuring good vision on the roads during winter is key to being safe while driving.
With the nights getting longer, more drivers will be commuting in the dark, meaning it is vital for them to be safe and to make sure they can see the road ahead.
