Durie's ABC boxer grabs first win, after last-gasp call to fight

Durie’s Boxing Club star Abe Renton grabbed his first win earlier this month – after being thrown into the ring at the last minute.

Coach Jamie Durie received a call for Renton to take on Nairn ABC fighter Connor Walker, three days before a show at a packed Alloa Town Hall on Friday, May 6.

The 19-year-old had the fight stopped inside the first round, having taken advice on board from head coach Archie Durie, of Rutherglen’s Durie’s Boxing Gym.

Archie explained: ”Abe was in against Connor Walker and came out the corner two hands blazing, almost immediately catching him with a good right hook to put the Nairn boxer on the canvas.

“Walker was given an eight-count and allowed to continue, but Renton went straight back in, catching Walker with another couple of heavy shots and the ref stopped the contest, with only around 40 seconds of the first round gone.

Head coach Archie Durie has high hopes for the boxer from East Kilbride (Rutherglen Reformer)

“My grandson Jamie got a phone call three days before it, asked if Abe was available to box, so we travelled through.

“Abe had never had a win, so I told him to start the round hard and fast, which he did in spectacular style.”

Durie added: “I was really pleased for him, he will never miss training and always gives 100 per cent.

“It was also good having my grandson gain more experience, working the corners with me and learning the coaching side of boxing.”
