Durham radio presenter dies aged 50 following short illness

A North East radio presenter has died at the age of 50 following a short illness.

Gary Wilkinson was based in Durham and spent over thirty years working in the UK radio industry. He could be heard on North East radio stations TFM, Real Radio, Sun FM, and Galaxy - also under the names Mojo/Nick Jordan.

As well as his work in the North East, Gary presented on Galaxy Manchester and did freelance work for the BBC. He even took his work outside of the UK, spending a year in Canada on CKNG Power 92 in Edmonton, Canada; and had yet another alter-ego, Pizzaman, during his time at Atlantic 252 in the Republic of Ireland.

The news of Gary's death was shared by his cousin Sue Lines on Sunday morning, who wrote: "Sadly late Friday night 28/10/2022 my fabulous cousin Gary Wilkinson passed away after a short illness. He was with family and will live on in our hearts and memories forever.

"Gary was my favourite cousin and a friend. It has come as a shock to us all.

"Please respect his family at this time xxxx."

BBC Radio Tees presenter Paul Gough said: "Sad to hear of the loss re the lovely Gary Wilkinson today. I shared some great nights with him through the years & we talked so much about radio.

"Gary assembled a fabulous CV via Atlantic 252, TFM, Galaxy & so many more. Rest in peace Gary."

Simon Grundy, presenter on Sun FM said: "Such sad news this morning to discover the passing on Friday of Gary Wilkinson (Nick Jordan to Sun FM listeners) after a short illness. Gary loved radio more than anyone I know from his days in Canada, Atlantic 252, Galaxy, TFM, Sun FM (and more). RIP Gary."

Dan Pye, Gary's friend, said: "Devastated to hear of the passing of my good friend Gary. RIP Gary."
