Officers from Durham Constabulary arrested a man on suspicion of attempted burglary - among a litany of other offences - in the early hours of this morning, after fresh footprints in the snow led them to a suspect.
PCs Dylan Middlemiss and Meggan Rutherford were responding to a report of suspicious activity at a property in Scargill Drive, Spennymoor, just after midnight last night when they noticed footprints in the fresh snow.
After following the footprints from the property, officers said they spotted prints from the same shoes close to garages and car doors - which led to an abandoned pushbike on Stanhope Close.

Police say the footprints then led to a parked BMW 3 Series, where a suspect was found smoking a cigarette. A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, theft, vehicle interference, possession of a controlled substance, going equipped for stealing and possession of a bladed article.
He was taken to Durham Custody where he remains for questioning.
