Language learning app Duolingo on Tuesday announced new experiences powered by artificial intelligence. One premium feature called Video Call allows subscribers to have a conversation with an AI character named Lily. Duolingo stock is a recent breakout.
Duolingo detailed its latest innovations at its annual online conference, Duocon 2024.
The Pittsburgh, Pa.-based company offers instruction in more than 40 different languages on its freemium service. It offers both a free, advertising-supported service and an ad-free, paid subscription service through its app.
Duolingo ended the second quarter with 34.1 million daily active users and 8 million paying subscribers.
New Features Unveiled At Conference
At Duocon, the company showcased two new features: Video Call and Adventures.
The AI-powered Video Call enables Duolingo Max subscribers to engage in spontaneous, realistic conversations with Lily, one of Duolingo's animated characters. It is available initially for subscribers learning English, Spanish and French.
Video Call simulates natural dialogue and provides a personalized, interactive practice environment. The technology adapts to the user's skill level.
Meanwhile, Duolingo Adventures immerses learners in a digital world for an exploration game-like experience. Adventures allows learners to apply their language skills to realistic scenarios, from getting their passport checked to ordering coffee, blending fun with functional learning, the company said.
On the stock market today, Duolingo stock dipped 0.2% to close at 269.79.
Duolingo To Release Mini Piano
"Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available," Chief Executive Luis von Ahn said in a news release. "We believe the best way to do that is by continuously pushing the boundaries of technology."
He added, "With new AI-powered features like Video Call and Adventures, we're creating new, immersive ways to practice languages and build confidence."
In other news, Duolingo announced a partnership with Loog, a leading portable instrument manufacturer, to expand its music education offering.
Duolingo and Loog have created a compact and portable electric piano designed for the Duolingo Music course. The Duolingo x Loog Piano will be available for preorder for $249.
Plus, thanks to Duolingo's recent partnership with Sony Music, learners can play along to popular songs from their favorite artists, such as Dove Cameron, Hozier, Meghan Trainor, Whitney Houston and more.
Duolingo Stock On Two IBD Lists
On Sept. 9, Duolingo stock broke out of a double-bottom base with a buy point of 215.04, according to IBD MarketSurge charts.
In intraday trading on Tuesday, Duolingo stock notched a regular-session record high of 273.22.
