The five-in-a-row Galway champions against the four-in-a-row Antrim champions for a place in the All-Ireland Club SHC Final. The opening salvo in a monumental double-bill of hurling at GAA Headquarters could be every bit as enthralling as the game that follows.
The clash between defending champions Ballygunner and beaten finalists Ballyhale is the second part of the double-header, but is preceded by Dunloy versus St Thomas’.
The Cuchullain’s ended Slaughtneil’s reign as Ulster champions following a hard-earned provincial success last month while St Thomas’ needed a replay to overcome Loughrea in the Galway decider.
The Connacht champions were denied a place in last year’s final by a last-gasp TJ Reid free which found the back of the net in the semi-final before the Kilkenny outfit suffered a similarly dramatic defeat in the All-Ireland final.
Dunloy have reached the All-Ireland final four times, but have never managed to get their hands on the Tommy Moore Cup, losing the 1995, ’96, 2003 and 2004 deciders.
The current crop of hurlers from the North Antrim village could be set to write their own history under the guidance of legendary boss Gregory O’Kane and they’ll relish the challenge of Sunday’s semi-final.
