Dundee United academy training pitch given £100k boost by UK Government

Renewal of Dundee United's academy training pitch has been given a £100,000 boost courtesy of a UK Government scheme designed to promote grassroots football.

The club's Community Trust unveiled plans last year to redevelop Gussie Park, which lies in the shadow of Tannadice stadium.

A six-figure renovation scheme will see the synthetic playing surface renewed to FIFA Quality Pro standard, new fencing installed around the pitch and the installation of new coach and spectator areas.

Some of the funding for the £300,000+ project has already been sourced from the Dundee United FC Community Trust and the Dundee United Supporters Foundation.

UK Government ministers have now agreed to contribute £100,000 towards the regeneration of the pitch, which supports the club's Academy, primary school activities and community teams, including those in girls and women's football.

Scottish secretary Alister Jack said the funding would "breathe new life into grassroots football facilities right across Scotland".

Ian Maxwell, CEO of the SFA, said the funding had been targeted at areas with historical issues of poverty.

“Our goal in Scotland is to harness the power of football, with the positive physical and mental wellbeing benefits that football offers being perfect examples of this," he said.

“This funding will open opportunities for increased participation across many different demographics, including boys’ and girls’ football and para-football disciplines, some of which will be in areas that currently suffer from severe deprivation.”

The 3G pitch replacement at Gussie Park is part of a wider re-development of the site, which includes the installation of a new spectator fence, dugout and goal area.

There is also potential to redevelop the existing pavilion to include a classroom suite and a gym.

Andy Goldie, director of the Dundee United Academy, said last year: "In the shadow of Tannadice, the location of Gussie Park not only inspires our young players but helps us celebrate the history of Dundee United, with the next generation looking to emulate the success of the legends and graduates who learned their trade on the same pitch.

"By the end of the project, our young players will benefit from state of the art facilities such as analysis and education suites, a physical performance suite, office space, changing rooms and more.

"We are extremely grateful for the unwavering support of Dundee United Supporters’ Foundation members, the Chairman and the board, particularly throughout this Covid-era, in continuing to back this project and we look forward to seeing the future of our club thriving in a facility we can all be proud of."

In total, 18 community football projects are sharing in £2 million of funding.

Other recipients include Stirling Albion FC, which will use its share to improve its Forthbank academy pitch, and Rangers ' Ibrox community complex, which has been given £150k.
