Dundee suffer damaging Viaplay Cup defeat at Airdrieonians

Dundee suffered a disappointing defeat in their quest to top their Viaplay Cup group.

Tony Docherty's men went down 1-0 at the hands of Airdrieonians in Lanarkshire.

A last-gasp penalty by player-manager Rhys McCabe was enough to seal all three points for the Championship side.

It was a tale of two spot-kicks that determined the match, with Lyall Cameron's penalty well-saved by Joshua Rae midway through the second half.

Airdrie are now in control of Group E, topping the section on six points after two games. Dundee has everything to do to ensure they qualify for the last 16 of the competition, with games against Dumbarton and Inverness remaining. The former dispatched of Bonnyrigg on home soil.

Across the City of Discovery, Jim Goodwin finally saw his players lift the pressure off his shoulders.

Dundee United beat Peterhead 3-0 in a comfortable afternoon at Tannadice. A debut goal for Louis Moult and two Kevin Holt penalties were enough to earn a victory for United finally.

Goodwin has endured a nightmare start to the 2023/24 campaign after the club's relegation last term. Early-round defeats to newly promoted SPFL side Spartans and Partick Thistle have left their qualification hopes in the mud.

But today's result should provide an injection of confidence, as the club gears up toward the start of the Championship season in a fortnight's time.

Falkirk and Partick Thistle played out an entertaining 2-2 draw elsewhere in the group, with the Bairns claiming a bonus point on penalties at Firhill.

Another team under pressure already in the League Cup campaign is St Johnstone. Steven MacLean's men went down 1-0 at Stenhousemuir last week in the opening game.

However, Saints quickly bounced back for their second game of Group A.

They thumped Alloa Atheltic for four at the Indodrill. Cammy Ballantyne, Ryan McGowan, Stevie May, and Ben McCrystal were all on the scoresheet, with the latter netting his first senior goal.

The result means St Johnstone are back in the hunt for top spot of their group. They face Ayr United in what will be a crucial game at McDiarmid next. Stirling Albion top their section after they beat Stenhousemuir 2-1.

Livingston required a last-minute equaliser to prevent a regular-time loss to Hamilton at the Tony Macaroni. Bruce Anderson netted to take the game to penalties, but it was Accies who claimed the bonus point. Cove Rangers beat Brechin City elsewhere in the group.

There were also wins for Stranraer, Queen of the South, Montrose, Albion Rovers, and Ross County.
