A victim of a savage bottle attack in Dundee city centre has described his ordeal which left him in hospital. The 20-year-old student spoke exclusively to Dundee Live about the moment a gang attacked him and his two friends on Sunday night.
His head injuries were initially deemed so bad, police officers rushed him to Ninewells Hospital under a blue light before an ambulance could turn up at the scene.
The victim - who we have chosen not to name - was walking with two female friends close to the old Debenhams Car Park and Lidl supermarket near South Ward Road when they were targeted at about 11pm.
A gang of four - one male and three females - approached them with a pitbull type dog and confronted them without warning.
The victim told us: “We were minding our own business walking home and for no reason whatsoever this gang started on us.
“Without warning the male punched me in the face and one of the girls got whipped by a dog chain.
“We didn’t want any trouble and tried to walk off. That’s when one of them ran up behind me and smashed me over the head with a big glass bottle.”
The group phoned the police and their attackers ran off.
When officers turned up they assessed the victim’s head injuries and decided to rush him to hospital.
The victim added: “I was in pretty bad shape. The officers decided they couldn’t wait for an ambulance and rushed me to Ninewells for treatment. I was in hospital for about two hours undergoing checks before they let me go.
“I was very lucky.”
And he added: “We did nothing to spark the incident. These people just wanted a fight with anyone.
“We were lucky. What happened the next time when they hit someone and they person falls down and smashes their head off a kerb.
“They could kill someone.”
