Dundee singer releasing album thanks to local grant funding

A talented Dundee singer is set to launch her first album thanks to a local grant windfall.

Demi McMahon was awarded over £300 earlier this year to help her complete the recording.

The 28-year-old - who also works as a care assistant with the NHS - said the financial support has been key to her success.

Demi recorded the album - called Rainbow Remedy - at the Gardyne Theatre Studios after she was awarded the Dundee Musicians’ grant by the city’s Leisure and Culture department.

Speaking to Dundee Live earlier this week she said: “When I was in the process of making my album the grant gave me the ability to produce professional work that I could use to further my musical career.

“It will also help me showcase my songs on tour this year which I am looking forward to.

“It also gave me the chance to have professional art work made up for my album too which was a valuable opportunity also.”

And Demi added: “It took longer than should have because couldnt grt into studio due to covid guidelines.

“I am so relieved it is finally finished and released 19th May.

“It is a colourful album with my original material which I am humbly proud of.

“It is brilliant to see Dundee Leisure and Culture show their continued support towards local musicians and give them opportunities like this to further their careers.”

Demi - who works in Ninewells Hospital - hit the headlines last year when a cover she sang was praised by X-Factor winner Leona Lewis.

The chart star commented after spotting Demi’s version of her No1 ‘Bleeding Love’ on TikTok.

Former Menzieshill High School pupil Demi currently works on a haematology ward at Ninewells Hospital.

Like most health care assistant she has taken her turn on the hospital’s covid wards over the last two years - an experience that left her ‘shellshocked’.

- Demi’s album - Rainbow Remedy - is set to be released on 19th May.
