Dundee's Natasha McKay fights back after early fall on Olympic figure skating debut

Dundee skater Natasha McKay fought back after an early setback on her Olympic debut.

The 27-year-old fell on the Beijing ice just 40 seconds into her programme earlier today.

But she fought back bravely to complete her routine in front of a huge crowd who had turned up to watch Russia's Kamila Valieva.

The 15-year-old favourite for the gold has been allowed to compete despite failing a drug test last year.

Speaking to the BBC after her performance in the figure skating, Team GB's Natasha said: “It's figure skating and mistakes will happen but after that mistake it was clean for me so it was an enjoyable experience to be out on the ice and finally become an Olympian.

“You have to refocus at the point and remember you've still got some jumps to do, don't let it slip this time then just go onto the next jump and take it one element at a time.

“It's been amazing just coming here and being an Olympian, I've enjoyed every minute of being here and I will remember it forever.”

Earlier in the week, Natasha’s practice sessions were attended by scores of international media as cameras followed the every move of doping-embroiled 1Valieva.

The five-time national British champion finished 16 places behind Valieva at the recent European Championships but was determined to seize her chance.

She moved from her home in Dundee to Bradford in order to get time on the ice, only returning home when the Scottish government revised their lockdown rules.

Her debut was also special for coaches Debi and Simon Briggs. Based at Ice Dundee.

Natasha became their third Olympic skater, after McCorkell and Matt Parr, who both competed at the 2014 Games.
