Dundee's five best Indian restaurants as chosen by our readers

There's no denying that Scots love a good curry.

According to data from takeaway service Foodhub, a quarter of us tuck into a tikka or grab a gobi every seven days - and one in ten of us can't resist having more than one Indian meal a week.

Dundee isn't short of venues promising authentic South Asian cuisine - making it hard to choose where to dine out.

But rather than just plucking a few names out of thin air and calling them the best, Dundee Live came to the people who know the city's curry houses the best - you, our fellow Dundonians.

After tallying almost 200 votes from Facebook community pages like meh Dundee, Braw Dundee and Dundee Take-Away and Restaurant Review - as well as our own Dundee Live Facebook page, of course - we have a clear winner.

Honorable mentions

While Dundee has some definitive favourites when it comes to Indian grub, the midfield of our polling was jam-packed with curry houses liked by plenty.

The Shaftesbury Hotel in Dundee's west end might not be your first thought when it comes to curry - but plenty of you say it's one of the best around.

Callum Muktar hailed it as the "best curry in Dundee" while Cat Litzbarski said every order was "spot on".

Bombay Joes in Broughty Ferry tied with the Shaftesbury as one of our runners-up, its traditional Punjabi cuisine called "always lovely" by one voter.

City Quay's Taza was also a strong contender, with Jim McHardy praising the open buffet so you can "try all their wares".

Dock Street's Koyla, Perth Road's Dil Se and Broughty Ferry's Indos also came up several times in our poll.

But five Indian restaurants finished ahead of the pack.

As voted for by you, these are Dundee's best curry houses.

5. Rishi's

11 Hawkhill, Dundee DD1 5DL, rishisdundee.co.uk

Rishi's is a solid choice for Dundee Live readers (Rishi's)

Rishi's Indian Aroma, to give it its full name, is hugely popular with Dundonians.

The Hawkhill restaurant, across the road from the Globe Bar (now Molly Malone's), says its food has been influenced by "thousands of years of South Indian culture".

Its specialities include the Rishi's Special Biriyani, made with a mixture of lamb, chicken and king prawn, and Chilli Paneer - fried cottage cheese cooked in Indian and Chinese spices.

Irene Wynne said of the venue: "Rishis at Westport...delish." We're inclined to agree.

4. Cinnamon

34 Main St, Dundee DD3 7HN, Cinnamon on Facebook

Cinnamon has been serving up curries in Dundee for years (Cinnamon)

This Hilltown venue lies just off of Mains Road, a stone's throw from the Hilltown Clock.

Cinnamon is a family-run institution and has been serving up curries to Dundonians for decades. It remains hugely popular for its wide range of options on the menu.

Amie D Thomson said: "We love Cinnamon, never get a bad meal."

And Mark Lawrence joked: "If you're no going to Cinnamon, you're a sinner man - facts."

3. Tayview Hotel

214 Broughty Ferry Rd, Dundee DD4 6LD, tayviewhotel.com

The Tayview's tasty menu - and river views - won over Dundee Live readers (Tayview Hotel)

As well as being a budget hotel, the Tayview boasts one of Dundee's best Indian restaurants.

Its menu features regional specialities from across Indian cuisine - as well as traditionally cooked charcoal tandoori dishes.

They're not afraid to mix things up with some Scottish-inspired dishes too, including haggis pakora and favourites like baltis, bhunas and tikkas.

Aileen Thomson said of the menu: "Best curries and the staff are friendly."

2. Jahangir

1 Session Street Jahangir, Dundee DD1 5DN, jahangirdundee.com

Jahangir finished a strong second in our poll (Jahangir)

Tandoori restaurant Jahangir finished in a very strong second place in our poll of real Dundonians.

"Using only the finest and freshest ingredients, our talented chefs offer a wide and diverse menu packed with culinary delights for you to enjoy," they boast online.

Plenty of you agreed like Derek May, who said simply: "Jahangir - can't beat it."

And Susan Marnie added: "Jahangir, every time."

1. Goa

7 Erskine Ln, Broughty Ferry, Dundee DD5 1DG, goabroughtyferry.co.uk

Goa was named Dundee's favourite Indian by a huge margin (Goa)

This Broughty Ferry curry house finished several votes ahead of any other restaurant in Dundee Live's poll.

It promises "authentic Indian cuisine" on its website, adding: "In Indian culture, eating isn’t just about feeding the body but also feeding the soul - our takeaway and restaurant engages all of your senses.

"We offer a world of flavours and spices, which all comes together to create a dining experience that will transport you to another world."

Sheila Gaughan said: "Goa is amazing", while Danielle Mordente settled for writing "Goa", with an emoji licking its lips, which seems fair enough.

Did we get it right?

Our polling, conducted across several community Facebook groups in Dundee, led to a clear winner in the battle to be crowned the best curry house in Dundee.

But the rankings can change all the time, and there might be some new contenders on the scene down the line - so why not get in touch with us via Facebook or leave a comment below if there's any we've missed?

After all, there's nothing like a steaming hot bowl of saucy curry, dished up with fresh pilau rice and a great big naan bread, to cure even the worst hunger pangs.

Dundee's very lucky across the city to be home to so many great Indian restaurants - and takeaways too, but that's another story.

Long may they continue - from biryanis to bhunas and everything in between!
