Dundee named one of Scotland's 'least caring places'

Dundee has been named one of Scotland's "least caring areas" in a new report.

The research has analysed the amount of recycling, charity work and carbon emissions in each of the country's local council areas - and put the City of Discovery second bottom, just above Glasgow.

Guardian Carers' report filched data from Sepa, the Office of National Statistics and Scottish charity body Oscr to create a "caring index".

Dundee scored 13.06 on the index - less than half of the top ranked area - based on its dismal 34.7 per cent recycling rate and an average of 924 charities for every 100,000 people in the area.

The city also has a high level of carbon emissions - an average of 9.4 kilotons of CO2 per square kilometer of land.

Neighbouring council Angus came third in the list, with a score of 24.02 - based on its widely recognised 54.7 per cent recycling rate, an average of 996 charities for every 100,000 people in the region, and an average of 0.1 kilotons of CO2 emitted per square kilometer.

Perth and Kinross finished fifth, with a score of 23.72 boosted by a high number of charities, low carbon emissions and a 49.4 per cent recycling rate.

The highest ranking areas in the list were Na h-Eileanan Siar and the Scottish Borders.

A Guardian Carers spokesperson said: "This data offers us a compelling insight into which areas of Scotland dominate when it comes to kindness in terms of charity support and environmental awareness.

"Interestingly, it is the less well-known and more rural areas of Scotland, such as Na h-Eileanan Siar and the Scottish Borders which lead the way when it comes to charity work and helping others, as well as kindness to our environment, above the major cities."
