Dundee MSPs welcome nearly £1 million cash boost for city’s drug support groups

Dundee drug support groups have been awarded nearly £1 million to boost their work in the city.

The funding is part of a £25 million cash injection for 80 projects across Scotland.

More than £10 million worth of funding has been awarded to 38 organisations which support people through recovery including Dundee’s WRASAC - Women’s Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.

This will be used to establish a hub in Dundee to support women with substance dependency and additional complex needs.

Eight other organisations in the city including Lochee Hub’s 5 Tier Recovery Programme will also benefit from the grants.

Commenting on the £818,851 award to local organisations, SNP MSP, Joe FitzPatrick said: “Having met recently with some of the organisations that have been awarded funding, I know that this is going to make a big difference to lives across the city.

"I’m particularly pleased to see that the Lochee Hub’s 5 Tier Recovery Programme is being funded by the Scottish Government, having heard from the staff there about how it can offer holistic support to local people, particularly around helping them to address trauma and mental health challenges.

“It’s vital that people in Dundee can access treatment when they need it and this funding will help to ensure that progress is made towards delivering the new Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) standards, particularly around access to rehab."

While Shona Robison MSP added: “The projects being funded in the city have a proven track record of supporting local people and this additional funding will enable them to not only continue that work, but to build upon it.

“Providing the right support to women and families can enhance the effectiveness of treatment and lessen any harmful impact on children.”
