Dundee firefighters battle major blaze in city centre

Firefighters in Dundee have battled a major blaze in the city centre. The alarm was raised at about 3pm on Monday after reports of smoke in Brook Street.

The fire took hold at the former Queen Victoria Works sending plumes of smoke in the air that could be seen across Tayside and north Fife.

Scottish Fire and Rescue sent six appliances to the scene and they battled overnight to put the fire out and dampen the remains.

Locals were told to keep their windows shut and were also advised that water supplies in the affected area could be interrupted as they battled the fire.

At the height of the fire on Monday afternoon, Police Scotland said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene of a fire at Brook Street in Dundee which was reported around 3.20pm on Monday, 25 July.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is currently dealing with the fire and while this is ongoing we would ask local residents to keep doors and windows closed and to avoid the area.

“Local road closures are in place with diversions in place.”
