Dundee Daily Mile event gets school kids up and running with rest of the world

More than 800 Dundee school children took part in a global Daily Mile event today.

The gathering was designed to get as many youngsters around the world moving on the same day.

The Daily Mile is supported by INEOS and celebrated its 10th birthday this week.

In Dundee, over 800 youngsters started what will be the largest ever mass Daily Mile in the grounds of Baxter Park.

The event included a stage, music and guest speakers.

Children from six local primary schools, including a number of local SEN children, took part on the day.

They were joined by guests including Minister for Public Health, Women’s Health and Sport, Maree Todd, as well as The Daily Mile founder Elaine Wyllie MBE.

At the same time, over 260,000 children from 1,040 partner schools around the world took part in Daily Mile events - in 16 countries from Scotland to New Zealand.

This marks the world’s largest Daily Mile event.

The event involved children running, jogging, wheeling or walking for fifteen minutes every day in school, in which time, most people will average a mile or more.

The initiative has enjoyed phenomenal success since it was started by then Headteacher Elaine Wyllie just 10 years ago at a single primary school in Stirling.

Today over three million children across 14,000 schools in 87 countries globally are now running The Daily Mile.
