Dundee council gives school pupils paid internships to support their careers

Dundee City Council has given a group of aspiring youngsters paid internships to help them shape their future careers.

The local authority has taken part in the Career Ready initiative, which gives school children in S5 and S6 a kick-start in their chosen calling and help with vital life skills. It includes a four-week paid internship across various departments of the council, with their contributions justly rewarded.

As well as working behind the scenes with council staff, the teens were given mock job interviews and training courses to help them prepare for the world of work. Reviews from the youngsters have been glowing.

Daisy Thomas, from Braeview Academy in Whitfield, said she had been able to improve her communication skills, while Praise Nnamuchi from the west end's Harris Academy added: "Although I found the prospect of doing an internship really scary I really enjoyed it."

The school children were able to work in various departments of Dundee City Council, from the City Centre Ambassadors who dole out advice in City Square through to the learning disabilities team supporting adults and children across the city. The work also extended into working with council partners like the V&A Dundee museum.

Children and families convener Councillor Stewart Hunter added: “As an employer trying to encourage opportunities for young people, it is important that we support the Career Ready initiative.

"This allows them invaluable insights into the work of the council, lets them understand what qualifications they will need and arms them with skills that will help in writing CVs and for interviews.

“I wish them all well for their future and hope that their time being mentored in the council will inspire them to achieve their goals.”
