Dundalk shooting victim 'lucky to be alive' as Gardai hunt for gunman in probe

The victim of Saturday evening's shooting in Dundalk is "lucky to be alive" - but Gardai are still hunting for the gunman.

Officers in Louth are still working out what exactly happened in Woodbury Gardens on Saturday night, with a man in his 40s left hospitalised after the shocking incident.

Shortly after 8pm, Gardai responded to calls from the housing estate.

Speaking to LMFM Radio, TD for Louth Ruairí Ó Murchú said the man was "lucky to be alive" after the shooting.

He told the station: "This is an incredibly serious situation. It's absolutely frightening in what is a very quiet community. We had someone come in and shoot up a sitting room and we're very lucky that we're not dealing with a death at this point in time.

"We're dealing with a man that all the neighbours speak about in very glowing references as being a quiet nice guy. This is utterly unacceptable and has to be condemned by all."

A Garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Woodbury Gardens area of Dundalk between 7:30pm and 8:30pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."

LMFM say that a dog was shot during the incident, which saw four shots fired into a sitting room in Woodbury Gardens.

No arrests have been made at time of writing.
