Duncan Ferguson is open to speaking to Dundee United about the club's current managerial vacancy.
According to The Courier, the former Tangerines striker is interested in the post as the side look for a replacement for Jack Ross. The club sacked Ross on Tuesday, two days after a huge 9-0 home defeat to Celtic. And now the Tannadice club are boss-less for the second time already this year.
Ferguson has been linked with the vacancy and the former frontman is not dismissing the possibility of a return to Tayside. Ferguson departed the club almost 30 years ago, going on to enjoy spells at Rangers, Everton and Newcastle United. Since hanging up his boots, the 50-year-old has spent time on the coaching staff at Goodison Park as well as taking over as caretaker boss on two occasions, most recently after Rafa Benitez was sacked. But he left the club in July in the hope of becoming a boss in his own right.
Following his decision to leave Everton, he said: “It’s been a massive decision for me, an incredibly difficult one but I need to move on, to take that next step in my career and look for that new challenge. Being a caretaker manager has given me confidence to step into management.”
And now sources in England suggest that the former Dundee United player is interested in opening talks with sporting director Tony Asghar as the chief looks for a head coach. The Tannadice reunion would see Ferguson return to where it all began under the legendary Jim McLean.
'Big Dunc' made his United debut at Ibrox in November 1990 when he came on in the second half for Christian Daily in a clash that saw the the visitors bring all three points back to Tayside. His final outing in tangerine came in an away clash to Falkirk in 1993 before he made the move to Rangers. An infamous headbutt on Raith Rovers' Jock McStay at Ibrox saw Ferguson become the first British professional player to be jailed for an on-field incident in 1994.
