Duncan Ferguson addresses permanent Everton manager search and Wayne Rooney rumours

Duncan Ferguson has reiterated he is only focused on Everton's upcoming games as rumours over a permanent managerial appointment continue.

Earlier in the week, the club confirmed the former Blues striker would be put in caretaker charge for a second time - starting with this weekend's fixture against Aston Villa.

As with in his previous temporary spell in December 2019, rumours suggest the 50-year-old could be handed the job on a permanent basis in the future.

However, Ferguson himself played down that opportunity.

He didn't rule out the potential, but admitted he didn't quite have the experience yet - even if it is his dream to be manager at Goodison Park.

Ferguson told his pre-Aston Villa press conference: "I think maybe down the line, maybe one day.

"I'll always dream about becoming Everton manager, but of course I've not quite got that experience.

"My job at the moment is to take the upcoming games, steady the ship and the club will go through a process identifying the new manager.

"I'm sure they'll do that and they'll bring the new manager in.

"You never know in football do you? But at the moment, my job is to focus on the next game, that's it.

"I focus on the next game and what happens down the line will be up to the club. We're always looking for the best managers in the world and I'm sure we'll find that."

Ferguson confirmed he had been in touch with Farhad Moshiri in the lead up to this weekend's match.

However, his commitments on the training pitch kept those conversations brief.

"I've spoken to him a couple of times, not very often to be honest because I've been mad-busy," he added.

"Yeah he's given me the full backing. It's one game at a time really.

"We're here to steady that ship and we've got a connection to the fans."

Another name that has been regularly linked with the Everton managerial position in recent days has been Wayne Rooney.

The former Blues star has been impressing during his stint with Derby County, and Ferguson admitted that he could be one of a number of strong candidates.

However, the caretaker manager refused to be drawn much further than that on the possibility.

"Well I wouldn't dragged on too many names and who would be a good fit," he remarked.

"But certainly Wayne has done really well at Derby hasn't he? He's an Evertonian and the fans love him.

"Obviously that can be one candidate of many candidates. Wayne's obviously proved at Derby he's a very good manager."
