Dun Laoghaire's baths set to reopen next week after major restoration work

Dun Laoghaire's famous baths are set to reopen next week following a major, multi-million refurbishment project.

The baths dated back to the 1800s and were massively popular with residents until they were closed down in 1997. They were left in a derelict state for over 20 years before Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Council started its multi-million restoration project in 2018.

The project includes a 35-metre jetty leading into the sea, a walk linking Sandycove to the East Pier, and work on the Pavilion building to create a new cafe and gallery space. It has also been proposed in the future to add a seawater pool to the area.

The €13.5million Dun Laoghaire Baths project had suffered a number of delays and setbacks since works began in 2018 . The project had originally been due to be completed by early 2019, but it was delayed following a site spillage and in 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic further delayed works at the site.

Last year a statue of Roger Casement was raised onto its plinth at the baths, and the bronze, 3-metre tall statue was created by sculptor Mr Mark Richards FRSS. The statue was commissioned by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and commemorates Casement who was born in Sandycove in 1864.

The the extensive outdoor spaces of the Baths at Dun Laoghaire are now set to reopen to the public on December 13, 2022.
