Dumfries welcome spring fair back to the town for first time since 2019

The spring fair has returned to Dumfries for the first time since 2019 because of the Covid pandemic.

March Fair organiser and showman Raynor Cadona is “thrilled” to be back in time for the seasonal event which has been enjoyed by generations over the decades.

He said: “After the Dumfries March Fair being off in 2020 and 2021 we are looking forward to a brighter 2022. This is the first time since the Second World War that the traditional fairs on the Whitesands have been cancelled.

“We would like to welcome everyone back to enjoy all the fun of the fair. As usual, we have brought a little bit of rain but with a bit of luck there may also be some sunshine too over the next two weeks while the fair is on.”

He added: “Fair organisers and operators are taking all appropriate steps to minimise exposure to Covid, and all government protocols will be followed.”

The March Fair opened on Thursday night and will run until Sunday, with rides open weekdays from 6pm to 10pm, and from 1pm to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Also open from 1pm on Sundays it will be on until 6pm on Sunday.

Alex James Colquhoun, chairman of the Scottish Section of the Showmen’s Guild, has also welcomed it back.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see March Fair return to Dumfries.

“ It has always marked the traditional start of the Scottish Showmen’s season, going back generations, so it’s very important that this will herald the beginning of a return to normality for us all.

“For everyone, showpeople included, it’s been a very difficult couple of years so we have a lot to celebrate.”

As part of The Stove Network‘s Atlas Pandemica project in the town, there is also a treat tomorrow for everyone.

Dumfries artist T S Beall and Mr Cadona will lead a walk through the fair and along the banks of the Nith, stopping at sites relevant to Dumfries’ fairs – past and present.

Attendees will have a chance to meet some of the showpeople who have operated in Dumfries for generations and find about the long history.

Anyone interested should gather at the east side of the Suspension Bridge (Dockhead / A781) at 5pm and the event runs until 6.15pm.

Those wanting to join the walk should sign up via Eventbrite:https://thestove.org/event/atlas-pandemica-its-a-fair-history-a-walkthrough-the-march-fair/
