A Dumfries student sang his way to success in the Rotary’s Young Musician competition.
St Joseph’s College pupil Peter Whitelaw won the vocal contest in the area heats.
He then went on to secure first place in the South West Scotland final.
And he proceeded to the District 1020 finals at Heriot-Watt University where he once again impressed the judges to come out top against some very strong competition.
The power and quality of his superb singing voice won through together with his “performance and personality” – a winning combination.
Following the District finals, Peter was then invited to take part in Rotary’s National final held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
Again competition in the vocal section was intense and Peter secured the runners-up salver.
Dumfries Rotary Club members were on hand to support Peter and are proud of his talent, commitment and effort in achieving such success, representing the club and St Joseph’s College in such a positive manner.
Peter and his family thanked his music teacher at St Joseph’s College, Fiona Sommerville, his brother Donald who has been his accompanist and for the support of well known local musician and singer Robert Lind.
Dumfries Rotary Club president, Eileen Robertson, said: “We were delighted as a club to see Peter’s success.
“We are sure that he has the talent to progress further with his singing in whatever direction it takes him and wish him every success in the future.”
She added: “We are delighted to once again have support from the Dumfries burgh secondary schools in supporting our initial club heat.
“Peter’s success is a good example of how the local Rotary heat can give a springboard for aspiring and talented musicians and singers.
“This year, we are especially grateful for the ongoing support of St Joseph’s College and Peter’s family in ensuring that he could take part as the competition progressed.”
