Dumfries Show set for triumphant return after three-year coronavirus hiatus

Dumfries Show is set to make its triumphant return next month after a three-year hiatus.

The region’s biggest show will make its comeback following the coronavirus pandemic with livestock exhibitors from near and far making the trip to Park Farm on Saturday, August 6.

Show chairman Calum McGinley said: “It’s been a long-awaited return and we’re looking forward to it to put everything back into action again.

“Sheep numbers are well up and the horses are up there. I haven’t heard about trade stands but we had a meeting with the trade exhibitors during the winter and they were keen to get going again because they appreciate the local shows.

“It’s amazing how in the last three years how many new businesses have cropped up.

“The food tent is a big part of Dumfries Show as well so it’s good to get them back in and let the public see how good things are in Dumfries and Galloway.”

Thousands of people flock to the show field every year and it’s hoped those crowds will return next month. Entertainment this year will include The Sheep Show and the main ring entertainment is Riders of The Storm.

Daffy Dill, a vintage machinery display, a rodeo bull, Dumfries Pipe Band, face painting and Nithsdale Alpacas will also be part of the festivities.

Secretary Susan Bicket said: “We’re really looking forward to seeing everybody this year.

“We’re hoping it all goes smoothly and the weather is good. We’re hoping we’ve got lots of people to see and there’s plenty to do.

“Our preparation has been a bit different this year. We’d kind of got things in place in 2020 and a lot of things had been carried over to this year. Fortunately we’ve been able to do that but there have been changes as well. But we’re looking forward to it.

“Most of the preparation has been done. There’s still things to be done, as is always the case, but we’re getting there.

“We’ve got exhibitors coming from all over the country and we’re looking forward to seeing everybody once again.”
