Dumfries will host the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games tomorrow.
It will be the last of the five-day Scotland leg and it is hoped the public will turn out to see the specially-created baton at both the Crichton and Dumfries Sports Club.
The baton carries a message from The Queen ready for the opening ceremony of the Games which run from July 28 to August 8.
In Dumfries it will be carried by baton-bearers Team Scotland’s para lawn bowls player Rosemary Lenton, Team Scotland cyclist Jenny Holl and Team GB Para-cyclists Fin Graham and Sophie Unwin from 2pm to 3.30pm at the Crichton – where onlookers will also be able to try out cycling.
After that it’s off to Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm where the relay will stop off from 4pm until 6pm. The club will also be running taster sessions for hockey, cricket, squash and athletics – all sports which are part of the Commonwealth Games and which also have clubs based at Nunholm.
Everyone of any ability is welcome to go along to give the sports a try for free and there will also be plenty of opportunities to have pictures with the baton.
The 16th relay began in October last year and has been undertaking an epic journey around the Commonwealth ever since to visit all 72 nations and territories over 269 days.
“Its arrival signifies an exciting moment in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.”
