Dumfries is set to host two major curling tournaments in the next 10 months.
The World Curling Federation announced the Ice Bowl will serve as the venue for a World Mixed Doubles qualifier in December and the European Curling Championships C-Division in April 2023.
It will be fifth and sixth major curling tournaments to be hosted in the town since 2014. The ice rink has also hosted seven international ice hockey tournaments as Dumfries continues to build its reputation for elite level competitions.
World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, said: “We are looking forward to taking our World Mixed Doubles qualification event and the European Curling Championships C-Division next season.
“Having hosted the very successful World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and the World Senior Curling Championships in 2014, I’m in no doubt that the local organising committee will once more step up to the mark and prove to be an excellent host.”
The mixed doubles event will take place from 3–7 December 2022, while the European C-Division will run from 29 April–6 May 2023.
In 2014, it hosted the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and the World Senior Curling Championships. In February 2022, the women’s and men’s Scottish curling championships were held in the facility.
The Dumfries Ice Bowl is home to Olympic silver medallists Grant Hardie and Ross Whyte, Scottish women’s champion Sophie Jackson and world junior champions Scott Hyslop and Jack Carrick.
“We believe these events will showcase curling in our region again and bring a higher level of awareness to the sport locally, inspire our next generation of curlers and bring the local community together to deliver these great events.”
