Dumfries residents who hit out at cycling tournament traffic restrictions secure council compromise

Residents in a Dumfries street who faced “ridiculous and unacceptable” traffic restrictions for an elite cycling tournament have secured a compromise from the council.

People in Summerville Crescent would have been unable to access their road between 7am and 6pm and park at the nearby Tesco supermarket during the UCI Para-Cycling World Championships in August.

But the council has agreed to tweak its plans to enable residents to access their street through the supermarket’s car park during the event.

In an email to one resident a member of the engagement team said: “We have made arrangements with Tesco to temporarily remove the bollards at the emergency vehicle access point to allow residents to their properties and also patients with mobility issues to drive closer to the doctor’s surgery. Access to Summerville Crescent will be via Tesco car park.”

A resident, Michelle Mitchell, said: “I’d like to thank organisers for listening to our suggestions and taking them on board.

“We’re actually delighted that they’ve listened to our requests and concerns and taken action as a result.”

Meanwhile, residents of Barnhill face a limited time window to take their cars out and their circumstances appeared to be unchanged.

There will be no vehicle access between 9.15am and 6pm on the same dates, with vehicle access via Maxwelltown Station Road between 12.45pm and 1.15pm, according to the local authority’s website.

A council spokesman said: “We have a dedicated webpage that’s been live since routes were announced on May 16 – www.dumgal.gov.uk/paracyclingworldchamps and we’ve been running engagement sessions every day this week, as well as some last week, we have also been visiting businesses located on the routes and will continue to do so.

“Furthermore, we leafleted around 9,000 properties once the UCI announced the routes, to inform those in affected areas of the races and raise awareness of our engagement events.

“We will continue to engage with businesses and residents on affected routes and would ask anyone who has any queries to contact us at cwc@dumgal.gov.uk, come to an engagement session or call us on 030 33 33 3000.”
