Dumfries record shop finally reopens following December floods

Domino Records shop has re-opened following the floods.

The popular store was forced to shut after the latest flooding struck Dumfries at the festive period.

Owner Rab Smith, 71, said: “I lost a total of £120,000 of stock and, like so many other people here, there is no insurance to cover it.

“But since re-opening it is probably one of the busiest times I have ever had.

“A lot of people supported the business and came in to say they hoped I would not be closing. I got a lot of sympathy.

“And I even had about 15 donations of records from people for nothing.

“They gave me records by the bundle and I got 10 LPs from one person and 100 LPs from another.

“People were so nice and just wanted to see me get back on my feet.”

The shop has been open since 1987 and Mr Smith added: “There have been nine floods which came into the shop since I have been here.

“There has been about 35, but only nine into my shop and the vast majority stopped at the monument across the road.

“I moved here in 1987 and had been 10 years before at a place in English Street, but the rent increased at the time my lease was up.

“But this has been the worst flooding that I have known since opening here. It is the longest I have shut the shop too, from the end of December until February.

“We were moving the records, tapes, CDs and DVDs onto a table while the water was rushing in and we were up to our ankles in no time.

“Then the water came after we left and it knocked the table over where everything was and that fell into the water and got ruined.”

Mr Smith now plans to keep Domino open until the summer in a bid to sell his entire stock then find new premises to re-launch the company.

He said: “It is a big decision as to whether I keep going at this shop as I cannot risk putting new stock in here and it gets another flood.

“What I am doing is to keep this shop until the end of July and start of August and sell as much of the stock as I can.

“I am looking at new premises – but some of the rents are horrendous.

“But, anyway, I am 71 and I’m not working past 75 so I’m looking at possibly four or five years at another shop.”
