Dumfries pub boss calls for River Nith to be dredged to avoid flooding

World’s End pub boss Kimberly Woodhouse has called for the River Nith to be dredged in a bid to avoid catastrophic flooding.

She was still dealing with the effects of the latest damage to her popular bar on the water front after the latest flood which she branded the worst ever.

Mrs Woodhouse said: “I have been manager here for four years and worked in the pub for seven and this is definitely the worst flooding I have seen. It is time the river was dredged.

“People say it would harm the environment and damage the otters and maybe fish and birds, but what about us? It might not cure the flooding, but surely it would help lessen the over all damage to the place and the businesses?

“I was at the meeting the other night in the Rosefield Mills Gallery in the Vennel and there were about 40 people there.

“People were wanting to know about compensation from the council and everyone had different figures but we were told the council had no money for that and now it was a matter of writing to the Scottish Parliament.”

She added: “A lot of my machines are still not working and I had to put fridges on top of the bar, but I still managed to get the pub open for business. It hit us on the Friday night very quickly. It was awful. I have lost my pool table. These floods keep happening and I really think it should be dredged.

“There was money given to businesses before in compensation back in 2015, but that was because it was a national flood but I don’t know how much because I wasn’t the manager back then.”
