Dumfries teacher Sarah McDiarmid has already surpassed her fundraising target before taking a single step on a sponsored walk for a cancer charity.
The 40-year-old is suffering from breast cancer and decided to postpone a birthday bash and instead raise money for the cause with a sponsored walk along with husband Tommy.
She said: “I was 40 earlier this year and rather than have a birthday party we decided to have a joint do together with a sponsored walk for a fund raiser.
“So Tommy and I are going to walk 10 miles. He is a postie and we will walk from Lockerbie delivery office to Johnstonebridge Community Centre on Saturday, August 26 and have a family fun day afterwards.
“He has been a postie for seven years and that is on part of his route.
“But we found out that it won’t be quite 10 miles so we are going to do a loop of Lockerbie town centre first.
“We originally set a target of £1,000 but reached that after just four days and after three weeks the total was £3,600. It’s just incredible. I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed.”
Sarah added: “I first got diagnosed in the first lockdown and got my secondary diagnosis at the start of February this year.
“Unfortunately it is at stage four which is incurable, but it is treatable. It is a shock, but we are trying to do something positive about it.
“Essentially research is the best hope for the future for me and my kids Harry, who is seven, and Ella, who is four.
“I am a depute head at Wallace Hall, a primary in Thornhill. I went back for six or seven weeks before the summer holidays just to get a bit of normality and back into the routine of being a primary teacher.
