A Dumfries mountain bike rider has secured a UK and Scottish championship double to follow in his brother’s tyre treads.
Callum McCubbing became the national downhill masters champ in Glencoe at the weekend – a month after he claimed the Scottish title.
It’s a championship double his younger brother, Frazer, also managed in 2013 while competing at junior level.
Bike mechanic Callum, 30, said: “It’s pretty cool and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.
“There was practice day on Saturday and a couple of practice runs on Sunday morning before a seeding run later that day. That gives you your start time for the rider order and then the race run after that which is the one that counts. You only get one shot at it and it’s all about finding the fine line of a clean run but a fast run at the same time.”
Callum, who is also the manager at Ae Forest Bike Shop and Cafe, has been competing for years.
He was encouraged into the sport by Frazer who now works for a top racing team and is currently in Snowshoe, West Virginia for the next stage of the Mountain Bike World Cup.
Callum added: “I’m in the masters category now so it’s for 30 to 40-year-olds. Going into the category gives you a chance as you’re not in with all of the elites.
“Frazer raced in world level when he was in the junior and elite.
“He’s a mechanic for Trek World Racing in the World Cup at the moment. He had a bad sciatic injury so he’s still racing but he’s a career mechanic for Trek. It’s a series all over the world and he’s in America at the moment.”
