Dumfries independence supporters set to gather for town centre rally

Independence supporters from all corners of the region will gather for a rally in Dumfries town centre tomorrow evening.

The 5.30pm event at the Midsteeple is one 13 being staged simultaneously across Scotland in response to a key court ruling.

Supreme Court judges in London will announce tomorrow morning whether Holyrood can lawfully hold a second independence referendum.

Dumfries and Galloway Pensioners for Indy are organising the Midsteeple gathering which will feature several speakers.

Spokesperson Morag Muego, from Dumfries, said: “The UK government in Westminster is obstructing Scotland’s efforts to even have a vote on becoming an independent nation.

“They have refused request after request to do so.

“This court ruling is a watershed moment – either we are a union of equals, or all Scots are prisoners of the Westminster government.

“The rally in Dumfries will be at 5.30pm on Wednesday evening on the 23rd of November.

“All citizens of Scotland – no matter their place of birth – are urged to join us.”

Co-organiser David Howdle, from Kirkton, said: “They will be peaceful protests if the judgement is against us.

“But they will be peaceful celebrations if it is in our favour. Denial of a vote would be blatantly undemocratic.

“So if the judgement goes against us it will be time for the people of Scotland to make their feelings known about such a flagrant breach of their right to self determination.”

He added: “The people of Scotland have consistently, over years, voted for pro-independence parties in both Westminster and Holyrood elections.

“The SNP has a huge mandate to deliver another referendum on independence.

“And the United Nations Charter, which the UK government has ratified, enshrines the right of nations to self-determination.”

The demonstrations are being coordinated nationally by broadcaster Lesley Riddoch with thousands expected at the main rally in Edinburgh.

Campaign group Europe for Scotland has organised rallies across the EU in support of Scotland, Ms Riddoch said.

She told the Standard: “People will be behind us at events in Brussels, Munich, Rome, Berlin and Paris.

“Whatever the verdict it’s time for people who support independence to become active and enthusiastic again.

“The Yes movement has become almost invisible to people from outside Scotland – and it’s time for that to change.

“We need to believe in ourselves – that’s what Wednesday is all about.”
