World famous poet Robert Burns, one the town’s most famous residents, was honoured with wreath-laying events to mark the anniversary of his birthday on Wednesday.
Burns Statue at the top of the High Street was the focus of commemorations in the morning to mark 264 years since the poet’s birth.
The event, watched by invited councillors, MPs, MSPs and public onlookers was hosted by Dumfries Burns Club and led by its president David Baird who gave a brief welcome speech.
Wreaths were laid by representatives of Dumfries Burns Club, Dumfries Provost Tracey Little, Oliver Mundell MSP, Dumfries Ladies Burns Club No 1’s president, Mrs Jackie Higgins and a number of members. Dumfries Burns Howff Club president Peter Hutchison also laid a wreath as did honorary president David Smith and honorary secretary David Miller, St Michael’s Burns Club and the Dumfries and Galloway Burns Association.
Then, children from Dumfries Academy, Dumfries High School, St Joseph’s College, North West Community Campus, Laurieknowe Primary and Loreburn Primary laid red roses at the statue.
Piper Callum Watson played the lament, followed by recitals from schoolchildren.
