Dumfries footpath shut off after claims of "years of neglect"

A popular footpath in Dumfries has now been shut off to the public after “years of neglect”.

Fences have gone up at the walkway near to the waste treatment plant in Troqueer after large parts of it subsided into the River Nith along with a metal barrier.

Dumfries resident David Slater, pictured left, who also highlighted the issue three years ago, insists that the lack of action to sort the issue is “disgraceful”.

He said: “This is a safety situation. It’s down to a lack of repairs.

“The council don’t really seemed to be bothered, do they look at this and think ‘so what’?

“I imagine the council will say they don’t have the money to fix it.

“But this is a lack of basic maintenance. I’ve highlighted roads before in the town and nothing seems to get done.

“This path has suffered years of neglect.

“It’s quite disgraceful really.”

The path, which runs alongside the River Nith and up to Mavis Grove and New Abbey Road, has been shut off however several people have been seen bypassing the fence to carry on their walks.

Two metal barriers were placed next to the crumbling tarmac but they are falling further down the steep banking with one sitting in the river.

Mr Slater added: “This should’ve been dealt with years ago.

“It was bad when it was highlighted in 2019 but the problems started before then.

“This path could’ve collapsed at any time with someone walking along it. They could’ve been seriously hurt or worse.

“They need to get it fixed or get repairs costed.

“There’s accountability and responsibility. Those two words seem to have been forgotten about with the local authority.”

The council was approached for comment.
