Dumfries footballer recovering at home after suffering horrific broken jaw

A teenage footballer is recovering at home after suffering an horrific broken jaw playing for Lochar Thistle.

Seventeen-year-old Liam Nish, pictured right, from Heathhall, was crocked in an accidental clash during Thistle’s 1-1 draw with Abbey Vale and later taken to Dumfries Infirmary feeling dizzy.

But at the hospital it was discovered the left back had a broken jaw and he had to be transferred to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for surgery.

His mum Margaret said: “It was quite a shock when Liam called to say he was in hospital at first.

“He had an operation to put a metal plate in his jaw and he also had one tooth taken out. Now he is resting up in bed.”

Lochar Thistle club secretary, Russell Caskie, was at the South of Scotland League match held at New Abbey.

He said: “We all wish Liam well and a speedy recovery.

“I don’t know when that will be but I imagine it is going to be a while.

“There was nothing malicious in the challenge and Liam was just running with the other boy chasing the ball when they collided.

“It wasn’t a bad challenge but the left side of his face came into contact with the opposition player’s shoulder. It was just one of those things.

“It was on the side of the pitch down the wing and he just came off after treatment, then showered and later complained he was feeling dizzy so we got him up to hospital with him showing signs of concussion.

“The lad from Abbey Vale who was involved has already texted Liam apologising, but it was just an accident and it had not been a physical game.”
