Dumfries curler Scott Hyslop wins silver medal at World Mixed Curling Championships

Dumfries curler Scott Hyslop has won a silver medal at the World Mixed Curling Championships.

The 20-year-old was part of Cameron Bryce, Lisa Davie and Robyn Munro’s team for the tournament in Aberdeen.

Scotland lost just one round robin match, to group leaders Switzerland, on their route to the final. Wins over Hungary, Slovakia, Luxembourg, England, Mexico, Austria and Australia set them up for the playoffs.

They began their title tilt against Hungary on Friday morning and won that match 6-4 to move on to the quarters later the same day.

That was a tense match against Germany with the two sides trading two points in the opening three ends as Scotland took a 4-2 advantage into the fourth. Germany could only manage a single in response and that was the difference as both sides continued to trade singles and Scotland won 6-5.

Scotland needed an extra end to beat Sweden in Saturday’s semi final. Team Bryce came back from 3-0 down in the first to eventually take the lead into the seventh end with the score 5-4. However, Sweden scored singles in the seventh and eighth to take the match into an extra end. Scotland used the hammer perfectly to secure a decisive point and book their spot with Canada in the final on Saturday evening.

Canada struck first in the final to score a double but Scotland responded with three to take the lead and extended their advantage with a single steal. It was all square again when Jean-Michel Menard’s team took two just before the break, making it all to play for in the second half.

The Canadians regained the lead at the restart with a single steal and edged out an advantage from there. Two consecutive steals meant a three-points gap and a great challenge for the Scots in the final end.

They gave it their all but when it became clear they wouldn’t get the points they needed, they conceded with the last stones to spare.
