Dumfries cricketer and Scotland team mates miss out on World Cup place

Dumfries cricketer Chris McBride and his Scotland team mates fell agonisingly short in their World Cup bid by net run rate.

Scotland faced the Netherlands on Thursday with the winner booking one of two spots up for grabs for the showpiece event in India in October.

McBride scored 32 runs from 38 balls as Matthew Cross was out for a two ball duck at the other end.

Brandon McMullen scored 106 and captain Richie Berrington added 64 as the Scots passed 200 before they ended their innings on 277/9 from 50 overs.

The Dutch were 108-4 in reply with McBride catching Wesley Barresi off the bowling of McMullen.

But the momentum changed as bas de Leede came to the crease. He scored 123 off 92 as the Dutch upped the run rate to get over the line.

In the end the Netherlands finished second with six points along with Scotland but had a net run rate of 0.160 compared to Scotland’s 0.102.

Captain Berrington said: “The guys will certainly be hurting right now. I’m extremely proud of the guys for the fight we showed throughout this tournament.

“Unfortunately, today wasn’t quite enough and we also have to give credit to their guys, the way they played.”
