Dumfries and Galloway train passengers to be hit by further train strikes during Christmas build-up

Further strike action is set to hit rail passengers in the run up to Christmas.

The RMT has announced plans for a series of 48-hour walk outs as its dispute with Network Rail and a string of train operators continues.

The move comes as members of the Aslef train drivers union get ready to strike on Saturday, affecting two companies which run services through Lockerbie.

The RMT cancelled strikes due to take place earlier this month after fresh talks were scheduled.

But the union claims there has not been “an improved offer on jobs, pay and conditions” during two weeks of talks.

As a result, their members at Network Rail and 14 train companies will strike on December 13, 14, 16 and 17 as well as January 3, 4, 6 and 7.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “This latest round of strikes will show how important our members are to the running of this country and will send a clear message that we want a good deal on job security, pay and conditions for our people.

“Our message to the public is, we are sorry to inconvenience you, but we urge you to direct your anger and frustration at the government and railway employers during this latest phase of action.

“Working people across our class need a pay rise and we are determined to win that for our members in RMT.”

The 14 train operators include Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, both of which run services through Lockerbie.

ScotRail is not involved in this dispute but will be impacted as Network Rail is responsible for infrastructure, with no services in Dumfries and Galloway having been run on previous strike dates.

Network Rail’s chief negotiator, Tim Shoveller, said: “No one can deny the precarious financial hole in which the railway finds itself. Striking makes that hole bigger and the task of finding a resolution ever more difficult.

“Only through reform, that will not result in anyone losing their job, can savings be made that can then be converted into an improved offer. While progress has been made over these last two weeks, we still have yet to find that breakthrough.

“We will not give up and hope that the RMT will return to the table with a more realistic appreciation of the situation.”

A separate dispute will see train drivers in the Aslef union strike tomorrow.

As a result, Avanti West Coast will run no services on any of its routes, while TransPennine Express will have a “significantly reduced timetable”.
