Dumfries and Galloway MP says Prime Minister Boris Johnson continues to have his "full support"

Dumfries and Galloway MP Alister Jack is continuing to give Boris Johnson his “full support”.

The Prime Minister faced further calls to resign this week – both from opposition parties and fellow Conservatives – after civil servant Sue Gray delivered her interim report on lockdown gatherings at Downing Street.

It found there had been “failures of leadership and judgement”, leading to Mr Johnson to apologise in parliament.

And while Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross has once again called on the Prime Minister to go, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack believes he should stay.

In a statement following a fiery session in the House of Commons on Monday, Mr Jack said: “The Prime Minister has my full support.

“He has accepted the findings of the report and he has made a sincere apology.

“He has taken responsibility and undertaken to fix things. I have no doubt that he will do that.

“Our focus must now be on the issues that matter most to people – recovering from the pandemic, boosting our economy and rebuilding our public services.”

Mr Jack later told BBC Radio Scotland he believed Mr Johnson’s apology was “genuine” and he had not misled parliament.

He added: “I work closely with the Prime Minister and I think he is doing a very good job on many fronts - the rollout of the vaccines, he is focusing on the cost of living crisis, he is focusing on the tensions on the Ukraine border.

“He is getting on with the day job, he is contrite for what has happened and he is going to make changes in line with what the report said.”
