Dumfries and Galloway business scores success at Scottish Baker of the Year

Dumfriesshire business T A Francis & Sons won a clutch of awards at the 11th Scottish Baker of the Year celebrations.

Now in their 110th year of trading, the family-run enterprise on Annan’s High Street and Friars Vennel in Dumfries, claimed both regional and national honours.

The team’s good intentions (GI) roll and chia bread won best in region gold awards, plus national silver and bronze awards respectively.

There was a regional silver award for the bakery’s biscotti cake, macaroni pie and GI bread, and a regional bronze award for their ancient grains bread.

Tom Francis said: “Really chuffed with the results of this year’s Scottish baker of the year awards – six regional and two national.

“Well done to everyone in the bakery, and thank you to all our customers.

“What a result.”

There was also success for Gretna Bakery which won a regional bronze award for its shortbread round in the biscuit category.

And John Gillespie of Stranraer won the best in Scotland and best in region gold awards for their carrot cake, a regional silver for their sausage roll, and regional bronze for their strawberry tart.

The awards were presented by Scottish Bakers’ ambassador Mich Turner who said: “With 630 products from 70 bakers in the running – each and every one of which was assessed for appearance, the quality of the bake and taste – they can be rightly proud of their win.

“We hope that for every well deserved prize there is a corresponding business boost.”
