Dumfries and Galloway braces itself for heavy snow

Forecasts of heavy snow for Galloway don’t often materialise – but this time it could be different.

Up to 20 centimetres of the white stuff is being predicted overnight and into Friday for the south west.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning to all southern Scotland over the period.

Yesterday afternoon indications were growing that conditions could be become difficult for anyone travelling.

March is notorious for serving up some of the worst blizzards in Galloway’s recent history.

The province was hit badly on March 12 1996 then again exactly 10 years later to the day in 2006.

Worst of all was the blizzard of March 21-22 in 2013 which cut off some isolated communities for days,

Snow lingered in drifts behind dykes and hedges well into April.

That event was also 10 years ago – raising the question on whether history will repeat itself.

Either way farmers would be advised to take what measures they can to protect sheep and new lambs.
