Duke and Duchess of Cambridge tribute to Deborah James after 'Bowelbabe' campaigner dies

A tribute to Dame Deborah James has been paid by Prince William and Kate Middleton following the mum-of-two's death. The campaigner's family announced in a social media post last night (June 28) that the 40-year-old had lost her fight with bowel cancer.

Following the tragic news, tributes have flooded in for Dame Deborah, who campaigned to raise the awareness of the condition while trying to show what life was like living with cancer. A Just Giving page set up by her to raise money for Cancer Research UK has raised nearly £7million as of 10.20am today.

The latest tribute to Dame Deborah has been paid by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Last month, Prince William visited the campaigner at her family home to give her a damehood in person.

On Twitter, the royal couple wrote: "We are so sad to hear the heartbreaking news about Dame Deborah. Our thoughts are with her children, her family and her loved ones.

"Deborah was an inspirational and unfalteringly brave woman whose legacy will live on. W & C."

Speaking at the time of receiving her damehood on May 13, Deborah posted on Instagram: "Prince William actually came to our family house today!! I am utterly honoured that he joined us for afternoon tea and champagne, where he not only spent a generous amount of time talking to my whole family but also honoured me with my Damehood.

"It’s quite surreal having a royal pop in at home, and yes you can imagine the cleaning antics and preparation went off the scale - but it was all irrelevant because William was so kind and he put us all at ease. He is clearly passionate about improving oncology outcomes as the President of the Royal Marsden.

"It was such a special day for my whole family, making memories to last a life time. He’s welcome back any time!"
